Sometimes we get so involved in thinking about deeper and deeper poker strategy that we forget to refresh our memories about some of the most powerful, basic, and profitable concepts. One of those is poker seating. The concept is so important that almost any skillful player who is neglecting this aspect of poker can expect to see profits increase by at least half by faithfully acting on this powerful poker truth

Choosing the right seat in a poker game is one of the most important factors in increasing your profit. You see, there's no such thing as a lucky seat in poker. Luck is always apparent after the fact, looking in the rear-view mirror. But there's no rational reason to suspect, in advance, whether you'll be lucky or unlucky. It's all random. And that applies to poker seats as well as to poker people.

Looking back, there are hot seats and cold seats; lucky seats and unlucky ones. But before that good luck or bad luck happened, there was no logical reason to suspect that it would. The lucky seat could have turned out unlucky and the unlucky seat could have turned out lucky.

Why it works

Let's look at a ludicrously simple example to illustrate this point. Someone has made the first bet. You've got a good hand and are playing an aggressive style, which means you raise frequently to earn extra profit. Suppose your loosest opponent is on your left, holding a weak hand, and acts after you. You raise. Now your loose opponent thinks, "Well, I would have called just to see if I could get lucky, but now I'm going to fold, because even I'm not stupid enough to call a raise." So, assuming you're going to win this pot, how many bets did you just gain from this loose opponent? None, right. He folded. But now suppose he's on your right and you act after him. He calls, because it's just a single bet and that's the kind of guy he is. Now you raise. It gets back to him and he thinks, "Wow. I shouldn't have played this garbage, but it's just one more bet to me now." So, he calls. Now, how many bets has he put in your pot? Two. And that magic happens only because he was sitting on your right and not on your left.

The one other seating consideration we're going to learn today is that tight, unaggressive players belong on your left. They'll still have a positional advantage against you, but they won't profit from it very often, because they don't play many pots. They simply won't interfere with your strategy as often as other players, so you can afford to have them on your left.

Table position is one of the most overlooked factors in the game. It's amazing how many people go on playing without realizing the importance position makes.

Ah, dear General... One of MY BIGGEST ASSESTS as being "The Poker Babe"... Yes, seating DOES have its advantages...

It's called cleavage... It's amazing what the 5 seat can do when you're the only woman at the table...

Defending against a "cleavage" attack impossible. That's why you don't see a chapter in Doyle Brunson's book on even trying. Best to just pack up your chips and head to sports book.!!!!

Yes ,I agree lots of chips to me made by seat selection. I love having a very loose "clueless" aggressive player on my right. Often one when sits down you hear a unified shout of "seat" change from the sharks at the table as they rush to get to the right of the loose cannon. This way they can raise behind him and knock others out.

This, however, sets up another dynamic in that if you don't get the prime seat immediately to the right of the loose cannon you will often be faced with a raise by the loose cannon and a re-raise by the good player to his right. If you have decent holdings you will have to 3 bet knowing that the good player is raising with a much wider hand selection now with the loose cannon immediately to his right.

I have to say this. When Dolly Brunson wrote his "BIBLE" on "How I Won A Million Dollars Playing Poker" women were NOT EVEN a factor in the underworld of the sacred society of poker. "WE" (meaning the female gender) were considered who you told who you were going fishing Saturday with the guys. You then show up at the game with a hat, rod & reel, and waders on, while your friends are looking at you wondering, "Just what the F*@K did you tell your wife THIS time Frank?"... Yeah, checking and raising with your favorite Jimmy Huston sunglasses on your forehead and drinking your Coors Light, smoking your Cuban Cohibas... Nope, women weren't invented in THAT era for playing poker yet... UNTIL...

Well, that's ALL changed now gentlemen...
I play in a gentlemen's game, so I play by the gentlemen's rules, with a FEW twists. God gave me a few visual distractions so you DAMN SKIPPY I'm gonna use 'em.
The world according to Poker Babe... Chapter 22... Coming to a book store near you...(winks)...

Peace & Have A Blessed Day!

Look poker babe, I can't tell you how many whores I have driven to the poorhouse at the poker table. I see cleavage all the time, who dosen't. Do you think people just lose their mind and their skills erode when a woman sits down at a table. When I see a woman sit down, I see dollar signs. Show me a poker table full of bitches and I'll show a paid vacation in the Bahamas. The General had a good post about seat positions and you disrupted with your slut talk. So go scrap together your laundry money and play some video poker and leave this chat room to people that are interested in improving their skills.

It's not very nice to talk about your MAMMA LIKE that you know. I KNOW she wouldn't want you to eat with that mouth, right? (It IS a mouth that those words were coming from and not your rectum, right?)

Have a pleasant day!

EDITED.

We do not want this sort of dialogue in the forums. Clean it up or find another place to post.

Seating is of course extremely important. Also another part of it is which table to play at. Buddy of mine still plays cards professionally and the floor person will steer him to the best game regardless of what game it is. Of course this is when you have a wide selection to choose from.

Pays off to learn all the variations of poker. If the fish don't come to you than you must go find the fish.
